Internet Explorer Vs Mozilla Firefox
March 11, 2008 by Balaji
Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 early last week in competition to Mozilla Firefox 3 beta 4. Both the browsers have successfully passed the Acid 2 test and has the capability to understand and interpret the next generation web development concepts. Many of you might be wondering “Which one of these two is the best browser?”
Let me share some data I have to give you a better perspective on which of these is most used by internet users. Before I present you with the data I found, let me give you a brief history of both the browsers. Microsoft had acquired Internet Explorer’s base technology from Spyglass Inc. in order to join the internet boom with Netscape(which was not able to sustain the competition). Firefox was created by Dave and Blake as a part of their Mozilla project in late 2004. For more about the history of Internet Explorer and Firefox, check out the wikipedia articles mentioned below.
I personally like using Internet Explorer when compared to other browsers but I like Firefox for one reason, the tabs. Internet Explorer also has this feature in IE 7, but I did not want to upgrade to IE 7 as many of friends suggested not to. Many enterprise did not like it either due to it’s incompatability with many enterprise softwares. Microsoft has also provided IE 7.0 blocker toolkit which will prevent IE 7.0 from being installed by Windows Update.

Now, let’s come to the topic I actually want to discuss. NetApplications released the Market Share report of browser in February 2008. The report reveals that 74.88% of users are still using Internet Explorer(irrespective of the version) and only 17.27% users are using Firefox. You may read more about this report by clicking here.

I checked the browsers used by the visitors of my sites and the results were in CONTRARY to what was given in the Market Share report by NetApplications. I have had 743 unique visitors to this blog in the last 30 days and 248 visitors to My ScrapBook. I see that Internet Explorer is having a hard time in retaining the market share with tight competition from Firefox. Check out the Browsers used by the visitors of my blogs.
